In 2010 all eyes will be upon the quaint European village of Oberammergau and a tradition they began nearly 400 years ago. After months of suffering and death from the plague, villagers vowed if God would spare them further tragedy from the disease that was ravaging their region; they would perform a play every ten years depicting the life and crucifixion of Jesus.

They were spared and since 1634 the villagers have fulfilled that promise. In 2010 the community of Oberammergau will once again come together to perform the Passion Play for the 41st time. There will be more than 2,000 performers, musicians, and stage technicians, all of whom are residents of the village…

About the Passion Play

The Passion Play runs from May through October 2010 and depicts the story of Christ’s Passion, beginning with His entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection. The performance starts at 2:30pm and runs until 5pm with a three hour intermission for dinner. The second half of the play begins at 8pm and ends at approximately 10:30pm. It is performed in German but translations printed in English are available. It is a moving and spectacular performance in any language. The play is performed outdoors with the sky and mountains as a back drop. It’s a wonderful spectacle of pageantry renowned for its costumes and music presentation and revered for the message of hope it brings to the world!
